Practical experiences
Throughout my undergraduate academic journey, I had the opportunity to undertake numerous practical experiences that significantly contributed to my growth as a data scientist. During my university studies, I completed an internship at the IT department of the Province of Venice, where I focused on geomaps. Throughout this period, I collaborated with the entity on the creation of some thematic tables of the General Territorial Plan (PTG), the generation of shapefiles concerning the bike-sharing stations within the Metropolitan City of Venice, and the representation on maps of the senior high schools within the territory. This experience allowed me to learn about additional concepts related to real-world problems, enhancing my problem-solving abilities. It was fantastic to share my knowledge with individuals working in the IT sector and to learn from them. This internship was particularly enriching because it offered me the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, dealing with real-world issues that required innovative solutions. Working on the PTG thematic tables involved understanding the spatial distribution of various urban features and integrating this data with existing databases to create comprehensive overviews. The creation of shapefiles for bike-sharing stations required meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of GIS (Geographic Information System) principles, enabling me to visualize and analyze the spatial patterns of these facilities within the city. Furthermore, the representation of senior high schools on maps presented unique challenges, such as aligning educational facility locations with demographic data to identify areas of educational demand and supply. This task highlighted the importance of data visualization in conveying complex information clearly and effectively, a skill that is crucial in the field of data science. Reflecting on this experience, I realize how invaluable it was in shaping my career path. It not only honed my technical skills but also fostered my ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams. The exposure to real-world projects taught me the value of iterative problem-solving, critical thinking, and the importance of communication in data-driven decision-making processes. Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects during my internship. It was a pivotal moment in my academic and professional journey, reinforcing my passion for data science and inspiring me to pursue further education and research in this exciting field. I'm currently employed on a 9-month Co.Co.Co. contract at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, where I'm developing a formation game for economics.
